WSREC Learn-to-Swim Program: Parent & Child Through Level 6
These programs offer a structured approach to learning to swim, starting with parent and child classes for the youngest swimmers and progressing to independent swimming by Level 5/6. We will not adjust the minimum age level for a class. This ensures a safe and appropriate learning environment for all participants based on their skill development and physical capabilities.
Parent/Child Lessons:
  • Introduces young children to the water in a positive and playful environment using songs, games, and parent-child interaction.
  • Each child must be accompanied by an adult in the water.
  • The child should enroll in the course, not the adult.
Bubble Belt:
  • Focuses on building comfort and skills for independent swimming.
  • Students must be comfortable in the water with a flotation device and follow directions reasonably well.
  • Instructors will be present without parents or guardians.
  • Lessons cover breath control, endurance, proper body position, basic pool safety, and alternating arm and leg movements.
  • Each child will wear a WSREC-provided bubble belt that allows for natural buoyancy.
Level 1:
  • Students must be comfortable entering the water without a parent and without a flotation device.
  • Focuses on building confidence and basic swimming skills using flotation aids (pool noodles, etc.).
  • Covers proper body position, breath control, alternating arm and leg movements, underwater exploration, and pool safety.
Level 2:
  • Students must be able to tread water for at least 5 seconds, put their face in the water, and float comfortably on their stomach and back.
  • Uses flotation aids initially, with the goal of independent swimming across the pool.
  • Introduces components of breaststroke, backstroke, and front crawl, preparing for Level 3.
Level 3:
  • Students must be able to swim the pool width without stopping, float on their back unassisted, follow complex instructions, and tread water for about a minute.
  • Focuses on stroke fundamentals for front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke, and sidestroke.
  • Introduces diving basics and continues pool safety and survival skills.
Level 4:
  • Students must be able to demonstrate all strokes (doesn't have to be perfect) and be comfortable diving and swimming in the deep end.
  • Focuses on stroke refinement, making swimmers more proficient and confident.
  • Introduces butterfly stroke, starts, turns, and continues diving and water safety training.
Level 5/6:
  • Students must be able to swim the pool length with each stroke without stopping.
  • Focuses on endurance, stroke refinement (including butterfly), flip turns, and diving.
